Free Crochet Pattern for a Newborn Baby Cardigan which is worked in Double Crochet using a 4.00mm hook.  

The original pattern for this wee cardigan was written for a preemie and small Newborn baby   Megans  Crochet Baby Cardigan Pattern which is made using an Aran weight yarn.

Many have asked for the same simple styled cardigan in Double Knit =Worsted weight.

in Double Crochet Yarn (*AF) and using a 4.00mm hook

17 inches around Chest area.
using a 4.00 mm hook and DK  (I used Marriners Super Soft Baby  which I find makes lovely Baby items)
Buttons
Needle to weave ends in.

Gauge: 8dc = 2 inches( I crochet very loosley )
Written in US terms

Please read all the notes throughout.

Ch2 counts as first stitch

Row 1: 1dc into 4th ch from hook, 6sts 3dc in next, (FRONT)
       dc in next 8sts, (SHOULDER)  3 dc in next st,

Row 9: Ch1, dc in every stitch including the ch 4, turn (68sts)

Row 10: Ch1, dc in each stitch, turn (68sts)

Row 11  Repeat Row 10 until work measure approx 9.5 Inches from shoulder.

Fasten off
       
Cardigan edging with Button Holes:  start at lower edge on right front.

With RS facing, and a 4.00mm hook join with your chosen yarn
we will be working in single crochet around the cardigan border (making 3scs into each CORNER, Turn)

RS: Ch1, 1sc into base of ch1, work sc evenly into row ends up first front edge
to front top corner, work 3sc into corner stitch, continue working 1sc into each ch around neck to next top corner,
3sc into corner, continue working evenly into row ends down second front edge
to bottom corner, 3sc into corner, ch1, work 1sc into each dc along bottom of cardigan to end,
ss to first sc on beginning of row. Turn.

Next Row:  Ch1, 1sc into base of ch1, 1sc into each sc to last 2 stitches , slip stitch to top stitch of the neck line for a neat finish.
FASTEN OFF HERE

Buttonhole Row: (Remember LOOPS ON LEFT for BOY . LOOPS on Right hand side for GIRL)   
make our evenly where you wish the button holes to be on the cardigan. I love the look of 3 buttons from the top on a newborn.
How. the buttonholes will be made if you wish more mark out evenly spaced holes.

Join yarn to RS of work to opposite  side.
work 1sc into base of ch1, (*make 2ch, miss 1sc, 1sc into each of next 8sc*) repeat for s many buttonholes as you would like,  sc to second last st ch1, slip to join. Fasten off

Sleeves:
Rnd 1: join yarn to centre of the underarm, (2nd stitch of the chain 4), Make sure this row is worked in the opposite direction of Row 8.
Ch3, (counts as first dc) Work Dc evenly around the armhole (34sts)   
(You will work 2dc into a SIDE of  ROW 10 stitches at Armhole see PIC on last page for visual)
Slip stitch to Join to First DC (4th chain from ch3) TURN
Rnd 2:Ch 3(counts as first dc), dc in each st around,  Slip stitch to Join to First DC, Turn
Rnd 3:Ch 3(counts as first dc), 2dctog, dc in all sts to last 2, 2dctog,  Slip stitch to Join to First DC, Turn
Repeat for 7 more rows: Ch 3(counts as first dc), dc in each st around,  Slip stitch to Join to First DC, Turn
(by doing this you will decrease 1 stitch per round)
Sc in each stitch around and Fasten off 

Finish as you please

Adults Basic Beanie Pattern Free Crochet Hat Pattern

Crochet Beanie Hat Pattern

If you are confident working out the increases for making larger or smaller, remember that using  different sizes use different hooks, and thicker wool can help achieve your sizing
Please note I am a VERY loose crocheter so if you feel you need to you can go up a hook size to a 4.50mm to achieve your sizing.

NOTE: The FIRST stitches are WOrked INTO THE BASE of the Chain stitch.

Hook 4.00mm

Yarn Aran / worsted weight 

Ch4 and join with sl st to form ring, ch 2.

Rnd 1: 10dc in ring, sl st to first dc, ch 2.

Rnd 2: 2 dc in base of chain, 2dc in next st, and in each st around,sl st to top of ch 2.(20 sts)

Rnd 3: Ch2, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next dc, 2 dc in next) repeat around, sl st to top of ch 2. (30 sts.)

Rnd 4: Ch2, 2 dc in next dc, (dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc) repeat around,sl st to top of ch 2 (40sts.)

Rnd 17:  I like to finish off with a smaller crochet stitch. I would work Half Double Crochet Around. But you can still finish with the  Double Crochet stitch around   (60 sts).

                                                             Fasten off and weave in ends.
